Basistobakker
Basic Tobaccos
styrke, man ønsker.
basistobakker.
Her følger en gennemgang af basistobakkerne.
Most pipe tobaccos are mixed tobaccos, i.e. mixtures of two or more basic
tobaccos.
When you mix more basic tobaccos, you can achieve exactly the taste and
strength you want. In this way you can get a variety of tastes to the delight of
pipe smokers, who are not afraid of trying something new.
The tobaccos, used for producing pipe tobaccos, are divided into types, i.e.
basic tobaccos.
Here follows a going through of the basic tobaccos.
Virginia
I dag dyrkes Virginiatobak i mange lande.
Virginia is the most wide spread of the basic tobaccos.
It has got its name after the state of Virginia, USA, where it was first grown.
Today Virginia tobacco is grown in many countries. Most important
producers are Brazil, Zimbabwe and China.
The leaves are 20 - 50 cm. long and their colours span from light golden to
dark mahogany. The leaves are harvested one by one as they ripen.
After the harvest the leaves are dryed with warm air.
Virginias have a high level of sugar content, which gives the tobacco a
natural sweetness. The aromatic taste depends of the ripeness of the tobacco.
The strength goes from very mild to medium, depending on where the leaf
sat on the plant and the local growing conditions.
Burley
Burley er den næstmest udbredte basistobak.
Tobakken stammer oprindeligt fra staten Kentucky i USA, og her
produceres en stor del af verdensproduktionen stadig. Andre
Burley is the second most widespread tobacco.
The tobacco originated in Kentucky, USA, and here a big part of the world
production still takes place. Other countries, such as Malawi and Mexico,
grow Burley, too.
The leaves are 20 - 50 cm. long, and colours span from light to very dark
brown. The hole plant is harvested when the leaves in the middle of the plant
are ripened.
Burleys have a dry aromatic and chocolate like fragrance. Burleys have a
strong character, due to the low sugar content in the leaves. The low sugar
content is caused by the tobacco leaves being dryed naturally without
sunlight for a month.
The taste is strong, full-bodied and rather dry. However, this can be changed
by roasting the tobacco at very high temperatures. This will bring out the
fine aromas, and taste and strength are changed to full-bodied and round,
with nutty undertones.
Orient
Tobakken håndplukkes blad for blad. Efter høsten sættes bladene på snore
og soltørres i lange guirlander.
Orient tobacco originates in the eastern Mediterranian area, and the best
places for growing Orient tobacco are Turkey and Greece.
The leaves varies in size and shape, from small heart shaped leves of about 2
cm. in length to about 15 cm. long, arrow shaped leaves.
The colours span from light golden to dark orange, and they can even have a
dark, greenish touch.
Typically, Orients are very mild and they have a light sweetness and a strong
aromatic taste.
The strong aroma is developed by growing the tobacco under very dry
conditions. In order to restrict evaporation, the leaves develope a layer of
wax, and this layer of wax contains natural aromatic oils.
The tobacco is handpicked, leaf after leaf. After the harvest the leaves are
put on strings and dryed in the sun in long festoons.
Latakia
Latakia tobacco originates, as the well-informed about geography surely has
guessed, from the syrian city of the same name. In old times this tobacco was
shipped from Latakia to Europe.
Now Latakia is mostly grown in Cyprus.
Latakia is an Orient tobacco, which after drying is smoke-cured by burning
special sorts of woods. This gives the tobacco a smoked and very
characteristic aroma. The smoke-cure with wood changes the tobaccos
colour to black.
The strength is mild, but the strong aroma often make smokers mistake
strong taste for high strength.
Tobacco mixtures that contains Latakia are called English Mixtures. Either
you love this mixture or you can´t stand it.
Kentucky
tobakken skyldes, at jorden under tobaksplanterne gødes kraftigt for at
The Kentucky tobacco originates, as the name suggests, from Kentucky,
USA. And it is still in Kentucky, the greatest part og the production takes
place. Other places, where Kentucky tobaccos are grown, is southeast Africa
and Indonesia.
Kentucky tobacco leaves are 30 - 70 cm. long and the colour is homogeneous
dark brown.
The strength varies from medium to very strong. The relatively high
strength of this tobacco is caused by the heavy fertilization of the soil, that is
done to achieve thick and very oily leaves.
Kentucky tobaccos are grown and dryed in the same way as Burleys. When
dryed, Kentuckys are smoke-cured just like Latakias, yet not as strongly.
The taste is smoke-cured, full and dry.
Perique
sovs. Bladene pakkes derefter under højt tryk i tønderne. Her lagres de i
Perique is the most rare of the basic tobaccos for pipe smoking. This tobacco
is only grown in one place in the world, and that is Louisiana, USA.
While grown, the top shoots are pinched from the Perique tobacco plants, by
which they concentrate all their saps and aromas in the few leaves, the plants
are allowed to develope.
Therefor Perique is the basic tobacco with the highest strength and aroma.
After drying and hand-stripping, the tobacco leaves are packed in barrels,
that used to be Bourbon whisky barrels. Before the leaves are packed in
barrels, a special juice is added. The leaves are then packed under high
pressure in the barrels. Here they ripen for several years, before the Perique
tobacco is ready for use.
Black Cavendish
Black Cavendish is the only basic tobacco that is not grown, but is being
produced from other basic tobaccos in factories.
Black Cavendish consists of both Virginia, Burley and other air dryed
tobaccos.
Black Cavendish is made by either adding a juice and simultaneously
pressing and heating the tobacco or by simultaneously steaming and heating
it.
This cure causes the tobacco to turn black. The cure also makes the tobacco
milder, and the taste gets rounder and sweet.
Black Cavendish is the mildest of the basic tobaccos, so don´t let the black
colour cause you to think, it is a strong tobacco like Kentucky and Perique.
